The only one foot over-bridge, located in front of Rajshahi city’s RDA market, has become a death trap because of no renovation. The city people are no more using it, and crossing the road with life risk.
The footbridge was built a long time ago, but the authorities have not taken any initiative to repair the dilapidated bridge.
As a result, people are crossing the road with risks resulting in traffic congestion, and accidents. The whole over bridge from the beginning to the end has become dilapidated. Stairs have decayed. It looks the bridge would collapse any time.
Meher Zaman Rupa, a student of Rajshahi College was returning with friends from RDA Market. She said, “If I did not watch the decayed stairs, my legs could be broken. Next time I have to cross the over bridge more carefully.”
Sharif Zoha, another student of Rajshahi College, said, “A few days ago, my friend suddenly slipped down the stairs. We caught him, otherwise he could have a big accident. Now, we go to the other side of the road crossing the main road without using the bridge.
Rajshahi College Principal Professor Habibur Rahman said that due to lack of proper care and repair, the bridge is a serious threat to the public movement. During the rainy season, the over bridge becomes slippery which can cause a major accident. Many more foot over bridge should be built in the city.
Ashraful Haque, Chief Engineer of Rajshahi City Corporation, said, “The work on the foot over bridge of the market RDA Market is currently is in progress. The renovation work will start soon.”
