The litchi growers of Tanore upazilla of Rajshahi are expecting a bumper
yield this year as the weather is in favour of litchi production.
Farmers
are busy nursing litchi and trees. The litchi trees have been covered
with nets for protecting them from the attack of insects.
Cultivation
of this fruit has already gained popularity in this region. At present,
there are 20 to 30 litchi orchards in Tanore. In addition to the
garden, domestic litchi as well as high yielding China-3, Bombay and
Madrasi varieties of litchi has been cultivated in the homestead. In
almost every area, the trend of planting litchi tree has increased in
few years.
Concerned sources said litchi
cultivation has started commercially in some areas including Charkhair,
Azizpur, Mundamala, Saranjay, Hasnapara of Tanore upazilla. Ripened
litchis are seen hanging from the litchi tree branches. The farmers said
that within a few days they will start harvesting litchi.
Afsar
Ali, a litchi grower of Mundumala village, said, if the weather remains
good till the end, the litchi yield will be good. The litchis have been
covered on the tree with net for the litchi to protest it from squirrel
and bats.
Upazilla Agriculture Officer
Shafiqul Islam said there are litchi orchards in 25 hectares of land in
the upazila. The Litchi orchards will grow further in the next three
years.
