A patient died allegedly due to negligence of doctors in Puthia Upazila Health Complex of Rajshahi on Tuesday.

Relatives of the victims kept the doctors and nurses detained in the hospital for about an hour and beat some of them. Later, the police rescued the doctors.

A three-member committee has been constituted to investigate the incident.

The deceased was identified as Roki, 20, son of Idris Ali of Kaiapukuria village in the upazila.

Relatives of the victim said Roki took poison over family dispute in Phulbari High School field of the village at around 8:30 pm and called his mother by phone. On receipt of the call, the family rushed him to the Upazila Health Complex.

They complained that no doctor attended the patient even after half an hour of reaching the hospital. The agitated friends and relatives of Roki tied two employees of the emergency department with the rope.

Then a doctor came and said that the condition of the patient was not good, and shortly thereafter, Roki was declared dead.

The doctor Kohinur Khatun, who was in the hospital, denied the death due to doctor’s negligence. She said the condition of the patient became critical soon after she visited the patient, and he died while treatment.

Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Saidur Rahman alleged the relatives of the patients misbehaved with doctors and employees and beat them.

He said a three-member investigation committee has been constituted. Action will be taken against the doctor for negligence if she found guilty in the investigation.

Puthia police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sakil Uddin Ahmed said, "We came to the hospital immediately after getting the news of tension and took the situation under control.

The body was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for an autopsy on Wednesday morning. An unnatural death case has been filed with the police station, added OC.
