The Rajshahi Shaheed Minar is going have a permanent form which was built during the Language Movement in 1952 at Rajshahi College Hostel.
Local people claim it to be the country's first Shaheed Minar built with clay and soil-brick. However, the opponents of language movement broke it down after its installation.
Although 66 years have passed since the movement, nobody took any initiative to build a permanent martyr monument. Finally, local MP Fazle Hossain Badshah has come forward to this end.
The height of this Shaheed Minar will be 55 feet from the ground. It consists of three pillars. The height of the largest pillar is 55 feet. It will be of silver color. The height of the middle and the small pillars will be 40 feet and 30 feet respectively. The middle and the small pillars will be in stoneware color. In the Shaheed Minar there will be records of history and tradition inscribed on the altar.
Rajshahi City Corporation (RMC) is implementing the project at the cost of Tk 50 lakh. RMC's chief engineer Ashraful Haque said the construction work will be start at the end of this month and it will be completed within next 3 months.
About this, MP Fazle Hossain Badsha said, “I have taken initiatives to implement 16 projects as part of the development project for the city of Rajshahi at the total cost of Tk 7 crore.”
When the construction is finished, he hopes the monument will be able to attract tourists also beside preserving history and glory of the great language movement.
