Police arrest 9 BNP leaders, activists

Police arrested nine activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) during a meeting in Puthia upazila of Rajshahi on Monday.

The activists are Joynal Abedin, Abdul Jalil Mollah, Shahidul Islam, Majibur Rahman, Lutfar Rahman, Hafizul Islam, Mansur Rahman, Abdus Sobhan Molla and Abdul Malek. They are the residents of different areas of Puthia.

Zainal Abedin is the BNP upazila unit organizing secretary, Jalil Molla is Zeopara union BNP convener and Shahidul Islam joint convener.

Puthia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shakil Uddin Ahmed said police conducted a drive and detained 9 activists in the Barek crossing area of Zeopara union where about 40 activists of BNP gathered for a meeting.

Sensing the presence of police, at least 30 activists fled the scene. On Tuesday morning, the detainees were sent to jail by the court, the OC also said.
