Detective Branch (DB) police arrested two Jamaat-e-Islami leaders at Paba upazila of Rajshahi on charges of planning sabotage for Rajshahi City Corporation elections in separate drives on Thursday morning.
In Godagari, police arrested four more leaders of Jamaat on Wednesday evening. An activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir was also arrested with them.
The arrestees were Paba upazila acting chairman Khairun Nesa's husband and jamaat ameer Abdur Rahim, 45, and former Jamaat ameer Jalal Uddin, 42, of the same upazila.
Those arrested in Godagari were Ainal Haque, 50, of Deopara union of Jamaat ameer, Amirul Islam, 55, Organizing Secretary of Matikata Union unit of the same upazila, Aslam Hossain, 50, ward unit president of Rashikul union, Noman Ali, 45, activist of Pakuria union Jamaat and Sadikul Islam, 28, activist of the Godagari Municipality’s Sibir.
Rajshahi City's Detective Police OC Rashidul Islam said, on Thursday around 9:30 am, Abdur Rahim was arrested from his house of the Kurihat area, Jalal Uddin was arrested from his house in Hazrapakur area of Katakhali Police Station around 11:30 am.
They were arrested on charges of planning destruction for the RCC election, OC also said.
District Police spokesman Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Abdur Razzak Khan said, Police arrested five Jamaat-Shibir activists while they were holding a secret meeting at Sultanganj Alim Madrasa in Rajshahi Godagari upazila on Wednesday evening. A case has been filed against them under the anti-terrorism act.
They were sent to jail through the court on Thursday afternoon.
