A total of six councilors have withdrawn their nomination papers on the last day of candidature withdrawal in Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) elections.
Earlier, three more councilor candidates including a mayor candidate withdrew their nomination papers. As a result, 217 candidates will fight to win Mayor, councilor and the reserved councilor seats.
Rajshahi District Election Officer and Assistant Returning Officer Atiar Rahman confirmed it and said that Jatiya Party nominated mayor candidate Wasiur Rahman alias Dolon, Khurshid Ahmed of ward no. 5, Mir Hanif Mohammad, Shaheen Sheikh of ward no. 13, sohel Rana of ward no. 21, Jabedur Rahman, Zahidur Rahman of ward no. 22, Ramzan Ali of ward no. 28 and Abdul Hanif Tony of Ward No. 29 withdrew their nomination papers.
After the cancellation and withdrawal of the nomination papers, the total number of candidates stood at 217. Of these, five are for the mayor post. They are Awami League candidate AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, BNP-backed candidate Mohammad Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, Shafiqul Islam of Islami Movement, Habibur Rahman of Bangladesh Jatiya Party and Murad Morshed of Ganasonghathi Movement.
And there are 160 candidates for 30 general ward councilor posts. Besides, 52 candidates are contesting for the reserved women councilor posts.
In the city elections, 52 female councilors collected their nomination papers. They all submitted their nomination paper during the scheduled time. None of their nomination was canceled during the scrutiny. No one has withdrawn from the election.
The campaign will go on from July 12 and last till 28th July. Voting will be held on 30 July. Now the total number of voters is 3,18,138.
