The busy Talaimari-Bhadra road in Rajshahi city takes a foggy winter morning look amid dust, imperiling green city fame of Rajshahi.
Adding further woe to the citizen plight, two lanes have
been closed in the name of repairing long ago where vehicles run along one side
causing frequent accidents. City people are suffering for the dilly-dallying of
the contractors.
However, Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) said that the road repairing contract has
been given to Mir Akhtar and Company. They are working on the road.
RCC's chief engineer Ashraful Haque said the sand was poured on the stone. Water
will be given over it and carpeting will be done within two to three days.
Now the repairing work from the city's Talaimari to the bus terminals stretch
of the road is going on although there is not much progress.
Due to the flying dusts, Rajshahi has become a city of dust. Students, office
travelers, drivers and pedestrians are forced to use 'mask' to avoid dust’s harm.
Airborne diseases are increasing in the dust city.
Auto-rickshaw driver Matin said that the drivers do not want to go to the
Talaimari and Bhadra streets. Auto rickshaws are damaged due to the potholes on
the roads.
Bangladesh Environment Movement (BEM) President of Rajshahi said, "It is
very unfortunate that the clean city has become a city of dust. Due to the
construction of roads and drains, as well as putting the building material on
the road, dust has increased further.
He also said that the people of Rajshahi have been suffering in various
diseases including breathing problems. Many people have been admitted to the
hospital.
