Padma devours 200 bighas of Bagha land

Devastating river erosion has started with the rise of Padma river water in Bagha upazila of Rajshahi where about two hundred bighas of land in Pakuria union have already been ruined.

This year, the maximum of the land which had been damaged in the river was mango and grape garden. If such situation continues, the locals said, the two villages would into the river within a short time.

On Friday, it was found that about one hundred families of the Jokkadirpur and Gokulpur areas of the upazila were displaced due to erosion.

Local residents said erosion has diminished due to shortage of water this week, but it would start to break again after the water start rising.

While talking to the reporter, Rafiqul Islam Malitha, a resident of Gokulpur village, said about 40-45 bighas of land broke down in the river last year and this year.

About 20 bighas of Azibar Malitha and Astul Malitha of the same village, Abdul Matin Malitha’s 5-bigha mango garden has vanished in the river. 13 bighas land of Munsur Malitha broke down in the river.

Pakuria union chairman Fakrul Hasan Bablu said he informed the Upazila Nirbahi Officer about river erosion.

Bagha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahin Reza said he informed the higher authority of the situation.
