Today, December 9, is Gafargaon Liberation Day. On this day in 1971, Gafargaon was freed from Pakistani army occupation.
On March 23 in 1971, martyred freedom fighter Belal Ahmad hoisted the flag of independent Bangladesh at the Gafargaon Railway Station premises.
Gafargaon was free till 17 April 1971. But on April 17, Pakistan occupation forces suddenly conducted airborne and land attack on Gafargaon Bazar and railway station.
More than 400 people of Gafargaon were killed in this attack. During the 9-month armed struggle, the freedom fighters of Gafargaon confronted the occupation force several times and achieved victory.
On December 8, before the country's final victory, the armed freedom fighters led by Afsar Bahini, Company Commander Sirajul Islam from Bhaluka and the armed freedom fighters of Iqbal-e-Alam and Kamal Bahini chased the Pakistani occupation forces from the side of Pithal.
In this situation, to be saved from the attack of the freedom fighters, the Pakistani force took shelter in the Dak Bungalow and Zamindar's house located at the upazila headquarters.
Anti-liberation Razakars, Al-Badar, Al-Shams also took shelter in the camp of Pak Hanadar Bahini to save lives.
But in the night of December 8, the Pak army escaped by train. On 9th December, as this news spread all around, thousands of people came to the streets and celebrated victory.
Later, the people took the Razakar and Al Badar members to the Lamkain Freedom Fighters camp.
