In memory of those we lost in 2018

2018 will come to an end at midnight today. The year has been marked by many a notable deaths in the country in the likes of Amjad Hossain, Anwar Hossain, Ayub Bachchu, Saidul Anam Tutul, Shammi Akhter and more.
Syed Jahangir
Renowned artist Syed Jahangir passed away on December 29. The artist was 83 years old at the time of passing.
Syed Jahangir was born in Satkhir in 1935. He served as the director of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy for 16 years. In 1985, the artist was honoured with Ekushey Padak.
Syed Jahangir was greatly influenced by American Expressionism and his themes are closely connected to rural Bengal and its rivers. Harvest, fishing on a moonlit night, paddy fields are frequent themes in his works. His works feature figures and objects that look more polished. Blue, golden, green and red are dominant colours in his works.
Shammi Akhter
Veteran vocalist Shammi Akhter has passed away. The singer breathed her last on January 16. She was suffering from cancer. Shammi was aged 62 at the time of her death.
Shammi Akhter is known for her voice behind nearly three hundred songs in films. She started taking musical lessons under the tutelage of Ustad Gaur Babu of Barisal. She made her film debut in "Oshikkhito" directed by Azizur Rahman. The film was released in 1980. The songs "Ami Jemon Achi Temon Robo" and "Dhaka Shohor Aisha Amar Asha Puraise" brought almost instant success for her. The songs were written by Gazi Mazharul Anwar and composed by Satya Saha.
A number of other popular songs by her include "Bhalobashle Shobar Shathe Ghor Badha Jai Naa," "Bidesh Giye Bondhu Tumi Amay Bhuilo Naa." In 1970 she sang her first radio song penned by Kazi Nazrul Islam, "E Ki Oporup Roop-E Tomay."
Kazi Aziz Ahmed
Kazi Aziz Ahmed, screenwriter of Liberation War film "Ora Egaro Jon" passed away on January 30. He was 80. Kazi Aziz Ahmed is also credited for writing the script of films "Ka Kha Ga Gha Umo", "Uljhan", "Erao Manus", "Sangram", "Ananta Prem" etc. He is also famous for writing the song "Chokh Je Moner Kotha Bole" which was included in the 1970's film Je Agune Puri starring Abdur Razzak.
During the latter part of his life, Kazi Aziz Ahmed was living in his residence at Gandaria. A couple of days ago he went to visit his eldest daughter, Kazi Bannya Ahmed in Sherpur. There he died suddenly.
Kazi Aziz Ahmed was born in 1939. He started his career in the film industry in 1962 as the assistant director of Obaidul Haque in the film "Dui Diganta." Since then he has worked in many films in diverse roles like scriptwriter, screenwriter, director, dialogue writer etc.
Ali Akbar Rupu
Prominent musician Ali Akbar Rupu passed away at the age of 57 on February 22 having succumbed to a heart attack. He was suffering from kidney problems. Earlier it was reported that he suffered a swoon and fell down in his apartment on February 12.
Ali Akbar Rupu has dominated the music industry only with his TV compositions for the magazine show Ittyadi. For nearly twenty-five years the show aired music directed by him. But before that he was a band musician. In 1980 he launched his first solo album "Ekti Durghatona." In 1982 he joined Azam Khan's band Uchcharon as a drummer and key-boardist. But he did not stay with the band for long. Soon he entered the film industry. His songs in the 1984 film Rastar Chele directed by Malek Afsari gained immense popularity. Overall he has worked in only six films however. Shortly after leaving Uchcharon, Ali Akbar Rupu had also formed his own band named Winds.
Pivotal songs made by Ali Akbar Rupu have been voiced by many an established singers of the country including Kumar Biswajit, Andrew Kishore, Sabina Yasmin, Niaz Mohammad Chowdhury, Samina Chowdhury, Kanak Chapa, Dinat Jahan Munni. The list of his songs include: "Ekdin Kannar Roll Porbe Amar Barite", "Jaare Ghar Dila Shangshar Dila Re", "Daradiya", "E Nishchoyata" by Kumar Biswajit; "Padmapatar Pani Noy" by Andrew Kishore; "Tomake Dekhlei Mounota Bhule Jai" by Shakila Sharma; "Pratiti Shishur Mukh" by Sabina Yasmin; "Jante Cheo Naa Kon She Bedonate" by Samina Chowdhury; "Purana Kaporer Moto Ami Aaj Obohelito" by Dinat Jahan Munni.
Among others his long time friend Hanif Sanket remembers him deeply. His demise has harmed "Ittayadi" most the maker of the magazine show thinks. Hanif asserts that Ali Akbar Rupu was a man of great simplicity, and did not take part in any kind of hassle. Hanif also claims that Ali Akbar Rupu can be credited with making the most number of patriotic songs for the country.
The great singer was laid to rest on Azimpur Graveyeards. He is survived by his wife Nargis Akbar, daughter Faria Naz and a son.
Rani Sarker
Legendary actress Rani Sarker passed away on July 7. The National Award winning actress passed away due to old age complications while struggling through intense poverty. There were times in her final days when she could not afford to buy anything but rice for a stretch of four days or more. Still she catered for a family of six to seven.
Rani has appeared in more than a thousand films in her long career. She was born in Shatkhira. After matriculating from Khulna Government Coronation Girls School she joined stage theatre in 1958 appearing in the drama 'Bargi'. In the same year she debuted in the silver screen with the film Door Hain Sukh Ka Gaon under director AJ Karder. Another Urdu film "Chanda" brought her into the limelight for the first time. The film was directed by famed helmer Ehteshamur Rahman. Then she assumed female-lead roles in Urdu film Talash and Bangladeshi film Natun Sur. She got National Film Award in the Lifetime Achievement Category in 2016.
Earlier in that year she received a grant worth twenty lac taka from the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. In a news portal she had claimed that had the Almighty Allah not acted to help her through the Prime Minister she would have become history long ago.
Abdus Sattar
Veteran actor Abdus Sattar is no more. The actor who is popularly known for his role in the film "Saat Bhai Champa" passed away at 2am before the morning of August 19. He has for long been suffering from old-age complications. Abdus Sattar was a lifelong member of Chalachitra Shilpi Samity or Film Actors' Association of Bangladesh.
The present General Secretary of Film Actors' Association, Zayed Khan claims that Abdus Sattar appeared in more than four hundred films in his nearly three-decade long career. He has also acted in a huge number of TV dramas. Sattar has also directed three films.
Sattar started his acting career in the film "Aamir Sawdagor Bhelua Sundori." The film was directed by Ibn Mizan. In 1984 he made his first lead appearance. This film named "Rongin Rupban" was released from Alamgir Pictures. Later he acted in Madhumala Madan Kumar, Saat Bhai Champa. The films directed by him are- Ashanta Dheu, Rakhe Allah Mare Ke and Faisala.
Ayub Bachchu
The master guitarist Ayub Bachchu passed away in the morning of October 18 in the capital city at the age of 56. Bachchu was not just a guitarist; he was also a lyricist, music director, music composer and playback singer. He is also recognised as the finest guitar player in the history of the country and also among the best in Asia. Members of creative media remembered him for his musical skills and ardent, endearing, down-to-earth nature.
Obscure band's Sayeed Hasan Tipu said that Ayub Bachchu was instrumental behind band Obscure's first stage show, which was held in Chittagong. Senior singer Tapan Chowdhury said that his first album was composed by Ayub Bachchu. Monirul Alam Tipu, band leader of Warfaze has referred to Ayub Bachchu as the guardian of Bangladesh's band music. He always tried to mediate between factions and resolve misunderstandings, disagreements. Vocalist of Souls, Partha Barua has said that his musical career started at the hands of Ayub Bachchu. Ayub Bachchu brought him to Dhaka and taught skills of guitar hand-in-hand.
Anwar Hossain
Renowned Bangladeshi photographer and cinematographer Anwar Hossain was found dead at a hotel in Dhaka on December 1. He was 70 years old. Hossain was the cinematographer on 'Surja Dighal Bari', 'Emiler Goenda Bahini', 'Lalsalu' and several other beloved films and was the recipient of five National Film Awards. His work is said to have ushered in a new era in Bangladeshi cinema.
Anwar Hossain was born on Oct 6, 1948 in Old Dhaka. He lived for over two decades in France. Though he received a French passport, he returned to Bangladesh a few years ago and began living in Shariatpur.
Amjad Hossain
Veteran Filmmaker Amjad Hossain passed away on December 14 at Bamgrungrad International Hospital, Bangkok in Thailand.  He was born on August 14 in 1942. Amjad Hossain showed interest in arts and literature at an early age. He won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Director twice, for the films Golapi Ekhon Traine (1978) and Bhat De (1984).
During the 1950s, he came to Dhaka and got involved with the practice of literature and theatre. He wrote short stories, juvenile stories and novels.
Amjad first acted in the film "Tomar Amar (1961)," and established himself as a director and writer afterwards.
Other notable films directed by the director are  "Sundori (1979)," "Koshai (1980)," "Jonmo Theke Jolchi (1982)," "Dui Poysar Alta (1982)," "Bhat Dey (1984)," "Golapi Ekhon Dhakay (2006)," and "Golapi Ekhon Bilatey (2010)."
The veteran director has bagged many awards during his tenure in the film industry including Bangla Academy Award, Ekushey Padak in 1992 and many more.
Saidul Anam Tutul
Noted director, editor, Saidul Anam Tutul has passed away. The veteran film artiste breathed his last at 3.10pm on December 18 at Labaid Specialized Hospital, Dhanmondi in the city. SA Haque Alik, general secretary of Directors' Guild said that apart from heart complications his lungs got filled with water. His blood pressure had also become uncontrollable. He also had kidney and breathing issues. At the time of his death he was aged 68. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Saidul Anam Tutul was admitted to hospital at 4am on December15 following a heart attack. Doctors suggested that he should be kept in Coronary Care Unit or CCU. On December 17 his life support was taken off. But things got really worse and out of control as he suffered another heart attack yesterday morning.
Saidul Anam Tutul first shined as a film editor. The first film with Government's Grant Surja Dighal Bari released in 1979 was edited by him. Along with Best Film, Best Director and other awards in seven categories in the National Film Awards the film also ensured Best Editing Award for Saidul Anam Tutul. He then went on to successfully edit a number of other popular films like-Ghuddi (1980), Dahan (1986), Dipu Number Two (1996) and Dukhai (1997). He took up film direction for the first time in 2003 with the film Adhiyar. Released in 2003 the film brought National Film Award in the Best Story category for Selim Al Deen.
The director is currently working on a project that has received the government's grant this year. The film titled 'Kalbela' is based on a 2001 book published by Ain O Salish Kendra. The book focuses on narrative stories of women during the Liberation War and in its aftermath.
