Noted art director Mohiuddin Faruque dies

Noted film director and art director Mohiuddin Faruque died Friday morning at Kurmitola General Hospital in Dhaka.

He was 78.

Family sources said Mohiuddin Faruque, who had been suffering from fever, along with coughing and sneezing, suddenly became unconscious at his Banani residence in the city. He was rushed to the Kurmitola General Hospital where on-duty doctors pronounced him dead.

Faruque's brother-in-law Shafiqur Rahman told reporters: "Dulabhai had been suffering from fever, cough and sneeze over the last two to three days. He kept himself in isolated in a seperate room from other members of the family. He used to talk to all over his mobile phone. Even, he had been taking medicines consulting with physicians. But, he was found unconscious inside his room late Friday morning. Immediately, he was rushed to the Kurmitola General Hospital in Dhaka where doctors pronounced him dead."

Shafiqur Rahman said after examining the doctors said he died of heart attack. After completing all the formalities at the hospital, his body was taken to the Jannat-ul-Mawa Graveyard at Mirpur Section No. 10 where he was buried after Asar prayers.

Faruque left his wife, two sons, a daughter and a host of reatives, friends and well-wishers to mourn his death.

Mohiuddin Faruque was born in Dhaka on March 1, 1942. He worked as art director for more than 100 films. The first movie under his direction was 'Biraj Bou.' He received award in Kolkata working as an art director in 'Palanka,' a film produced jointly by Bangladesh and India under the directorship of note Indian filmmaker Rajen Tarafder.

As the art director, Mohiuddin Faruque's first movie was 'Poonam Ki Raat.' He then worked for 'Lathial,' 'Mintu Amar Naam,' 'Protiggya,' 'Basundhara,' 'Dumurer Phool,' 'Nazma,' 'Sohag Milon,' 'Sareng Bou,' 'Surjodighal Bari,' 'Syot Bhai,' 'Champa Dangar Bou,' 'Ovijan,' 'Jonny,' 'Maan Sanman,' 'Padma Nadir Majhi,' etc.

The last film, in which, Mohiuddin Faruque worked as an art director was 'Moner Manush.' He also received national award for the film which was directed by noted Indian film-maker Goutam Ghosh.

He served as the chairman of the Department of Film and Media Studies at Stamford University. Besides, he was a teacher at Bangladesh Film and Television Institute.
