Ismat Jahan, currently Bangladesh Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union (EU), has been appointed envoy of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at its Permanent Observer Mission to the EU in Brussels.
The OIC, an influential bloc of 57 Muslim countries, officially inaugurated the Permanent Observer Mission to the EU in June, 2013.
OIC Secretary General Iyad Ameen Madani has already approved the appointment of Ismat though the government is yet to disclose it officially, a diplomatic source told UNB on Tuesday night.
An official at the ministry said it is a big achievement for Bangladesh as Ismat will be the first Bangladeshi to get appointed as the OIC envoy to its mission.
She will serve as OIC envoy for the next four years as the second OIC envoy to the Mission opened in 2013.
Earlier in April this year, Ismat was appointed Bangladesh's next High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
However, this appointment has been cancelled. And Bangladesh Ambassador to Indonesia Md Nazmul Quaunine has been appointed Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK, said another source.
In her diplomatic career, Ismat served as the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN in New York and Bangladesh Ambassador to the Netherlands.    UNB
