BNP leader and former state minister Abdul Mannan dies

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) central executive committee's vice-chairman and former state minister Abdul Mannan has died. He was 78.

Mannan died at Ever Care Hospital in Dhaka at about 9:20pm on Tuesday. He left behind a daughter, relatives, friends and well wishers to mourn his death.

BNP chairperson's press wing member Shamsuddin Didar confirmed it.

The BNP leader was admitted to the hospital on Sunday. Later, he was given treatment keeping in the coronary care unit (CCU). He had been suffering various old-age complications.

Abdul Mannan was the Managing Director of Biman Bangladesh Airlines. Following his retirement, he was elected member of parliament four times--in 1991, February 1996, June 1996 and 2001--from Dhaka-2 constituency of Jatiya Sangsad as a BNP candidate.

Mannan served as State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism from 1991 to 1996. He was elected BNP's Dhaka district president in 2010. He was the BNP central executive committee's vice-chairman until his death. He also contested the 2018 parliamentary election from Dhaka-10 constituency with the 'Sheaf of Paddy' symbol.

His first namaj-e-janaza will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday at the BNP central office premises a t Nayapaltan in Dhaka
