A tenant was beaten to death allegedly by his landlord in Bandar upazila of Narayanganj district on Friday as he failed to pay the rent money.
The victim is Md Fayez, 42, a resident of Char Balaki village in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj.
However, police arrested the landlord's wife Umme Kulsum, tenant Mohiuddin and his wife Shirina Begum following a case filed by the deceased's wife Rozina Begum with Bandar Police Station on Friday, OC Fakhruddin Bhuiyan confirmed.
Quoting the case statement, OC Fakhruddin said Fayez along with his family had been living in a rented house owned by Misir Ali at Prodhan Bari area for several years.
He could not pay the rent timely for the last few months due to a financial crisis caused by coronavirus pandemic and the due stood at Tk7,000.
The landlord's wife Umme Kulsum created pressure on him for the amount on Thursday night and he only could pay Tk4,000. They also had a quarrel over the remaining Tk3,000.
On Friday morning, Umme Kulsum along with tenant Mohiuddin and his wife Shirina threatened Fayez to evict him from the house if he failed to pay the due amount at the moment.
At one stage of the altercation, the trio beat up him indiscriminately, leaving him severely injured.
Locals rescued him and took him to Narayanganj General Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, said OC Fakhruddin.
The body was kept at the hospital morgue, he added.
