Writ filed to stop tree felling at Suhrawardy Udyan

A writ petition has been filed to stop tree felling and construction of infrastructure at historic Suhrawardy Udyanin in Dhaka.

Six environmental organisation including Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) and an individual filed the writ with the High Court on Sunday.

It also sought to keep the original structure of ‘Udyan’ in the masterplan of Swadhinata Stambha Project.

Meanwhile, a legal notice has been served on the Bangladesh government asking it to stop within 48 hours felling of trees of the Suhrawardy Udyanin to facilitate construction of restaurants.

Supreme Court lawyer Manzill Murshid on behalf of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh served the notice to Liberation War ministry’s secretary, the chief engineer of public works department and the chief architect of Bangladesh on Thursday.
