JU lodges case against BCL leader, associates for rape

The authorities of Jahangirnagar University on Sunday lodged a case against two rapists and their associates for raping a woman, involving a leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League and his associates on the JU campus while keeping her husband confined on Saturday night.

Abdullah Hil Kafi, Dhaka districts additional police super (Crime and Ops and Traffic, North division), confirmed the matter on Monday.

He said, "We have received a written complaint from the university administration. We are taking action in this regard. The arrested are being remanded and interrogated."

"The victim woman is currently in the One Stop Crisis Center of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for a medical check-up," he added.

According to the complaint letter, the accused are - Mustafizur Rahman, his associates Mamunur Rashid, Shah Poran, ASM Mostafa Monwar Siddiki Sagar, Sabbir Hossain, Hasanuzzaman, and Md Murad. Of the accused, Mamunur Rashid was not a student at the university.

Meanwhile, the teachers and students of the university formed a platform under the banner of Jahangirnagar Against Oppression to foster pressure on the administration to ensure the overall security of the campus.

However, a group of students staged a demonstration in front of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall after forming a human chain at around 11:30 am at the central Shaheed Minar of the university on Monday.

Later, the protesters held a mass procession program to uphold the stance against rape and all kinds of oppression.

Earlier on Sunday afternoon, an emergency syndicate meeting was held under the chairmanship of JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Nurul Alam.

After the meeting, Prof Md Nurul Alam said, We, in an emergency syndicate meeting, have decided to suspend three current students of the university - Sagar, Sabbir, and Murad and withhold the certificates of a total of six former and present students involved in the incident. said He said that certificates of former students, including Mustafizur, Hasan, and Shah Poran, were withheld for their alleged involvement in the heinous crime on the campus.

He said that they were also declared unwanted on the campus.

The university authorities also formed a three-member probe committee to investigate the incident.
