Veteran leftist leader Rono no more

An adviser to Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), veteran leftist politician, freedom fighter and writer Haider Akbar Khan Rono passed away in the early hours of Saturday at a private hospital at the age of 82.

Haider Akbar Khan Rono had been suffering from chronic lung disease. He was admitted to the Health and Hope Hospital in the evening of May 6 with acute respiratory disease (type-2 respiratory failure), CPB said in a press release.

The veteran leftist leader was receiving treatment from his residence in Dhanmondi , but he became severely ill, he had been suffering from severe breathing problems. He was taken to the hospital where he passed away at 2: 05 am, it said.

Throughout his lengthy political career, starting from the 1962 East Pakistan Education movement, Rono remained steadfast in the struggle against dictatorship in Pakistan, the liberation war, and the fight to establish secularism, democracy, and socialism in Bangladesh.

When he was a student of Physics Department at Dhaka University, He also played important roles in the Language Movement, the students movement of 1962, the mass upsurge of 1969, the Liberation War of 1971, anti-autocrat movement in the 1980s, and the mass upsurge of 1990.

He was involved in the Communist Partys activities in 1960. From 1963 to 1965, he was elected general secretary of the East Pakistan Students Union. In 1966, he joined the workers struggle, contributing significantly to the liberation movement of the working class.

He dedicated himself to organizing the working people of Bangladesh despite facing imprisonment and oppression, he continued his unwavering commitment to the cause. He directly got involved in the labour movement. He started to live with the labours in Tongi areas since late 60s. He joined with the Workers Party of Bangladesh and gradually became one of the leading organisers and leaders of the Liberation War in 1971.

He also authored several books on politics, economics, philosophy and even literature and science. He was awarded the prestigious Bangla Academy Sahittya Purashkar in 2022. As a Marxist theoretician, he left behind numerous writings that will inspire future generations in their struggle for liberation.

Over ideological differences with the Workers Party of Bangladesh, Haider Akbar Khan Rono left the party and joined the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB). He became a presidium member of CPB in 2012 before elevating to adviser.

CPB in a statement said, Haider Akbar Khan Rono, a veteran politician and member of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), will be laid to rest at the Banani graveyard in the capital on Monday.

The body of Haider will be taken to the Central Office of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPP) Mukti Bhaban before being moved to the Shaheed Minar around 10am on Monday, where the party will pay homage.

Expressing deep grief over Haider Akbar Khans demise, President of the CPB, veteran freedom fighter Mohammad Shah Alam, and General Secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince said that the nation lost a patriot, a lifelong fighter and a beloved individual in the fight for the countrys liberation.

Furthermore, on Monday, black flags will be raised at party offices nationwide, the party flag will be flown at half-mast, and programmes for remembrance and mourning will be announced.

The statement expressed condolences to his bereaved family and emphasized that Ronos legacy will be remembered through the ongoing struggle to establish socialism and a "free society of free people."

A Marxist theorist and veteran leftist leader Haider Akbar Khan Rono, was born on August 31, 1942 in Kolkata, Bengal Presidency, British India (now Kolkata). His ancestral home is in Borashula village in Narail. He is survived by his only daughter Rana Sultana and a host of relatives, friends and admirers to mourn his death.
