Awami League supporters of Barguna and Gopalganj on Saturday took to the streets vowing to bring back former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh.

Thousands of leaders and activists of Awami League (AL) and its associated bodies on Saturday took oath at Gopalganj district including the leaders of Kotalipara AL unit wearing burial shrouds on their heads to bring back former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from abroad. Gopalganj District AL President Mahabub Ali Khan administered the oath at the upazila parishad premises on Saturday morning.

Key attendees included Gopalganj district AL general secretary GM Shahabuddin Azam, Kotalipara upazila AL President Bhavendranath Biswas, general secretary Aynal Hossain Sheikh, joint secretary Kamal Hossain Sheikh, district Chhatra Legue president Neuton Mollah and others leaders of its associate bodies Awami Swecchhasebak League, Juba League and Chhatra League.

Before the event, leaders and activists from 11 unions and one municipality in the upazila arrived at the premises armed with local weapons, sticks and oars.

Despite the protest procession being scheduled for 11:00am, the upazila parishad grounds and surrounding areas were already filled with activists by 9:00am, leading to a blockade of the Gopalganj-Poysharhat road. At 11:00am, Mahabub Ali Khan administered the oath before the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, with slogans echoing throughout the area.

Mahabub Ali Khan stated, "Our struggle will continue until the country's AL President and daughter of Bangabandhu, Sheikh Hasina, returns home. We are on the streets, and we will remain there."

He assured party activists saying, "Our beloved leader will return home soon and resume charge of the party."

Barguna District Awami League held a protest march and rally demanding the return of Sheikh Hasina to the country, protesting ongoing violence, and calling for fair elections through a democratic process.

Meanwhile Our Correspondent adds thousands of enraged protesters vandilised and set ablaze a vehicle of Bangladesh Army in Gopalganj Sadar upazila on Saturday.

The incident has resulted in injuries to 15 people, including military personnel, journalists and locals. Among the injured, two individuals have been shot.

Lt Col Maksudur Rahman of Gopalganj camp confirmed the incident.

Locals sources reported that the unrest began on Saturday afternoon when thousands of Awami League leaders and activists gathered at Gopinathpur stand to take oath to bring back former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from abroad. They blocked the Dhaka-Khulna Highway to stage the protest.
