Anti-Corruption Commission chairman Mohammed Moinuddin Abdullah and two commissioners Asia Khatun and Jaharul Haque have resigned on Tuesday.

The ACC chairman confirmed the information to reporters on Tuesday afternoon, saying he and two commissioners -Jahaurul Haque (investigation) and Asia Khatun (inquiry) - submitted their resignations.

He, however, did not disclose the reasons of their resignation. But a senior official of the ACC said that they resigned from their posts citing personal reasons.

They have resigned after two and a half months into changing of the government through a mass uprising. The full commission left the office at about 2:10pm on Tuesday, the ACC sources informed.

Earlier, in 2021, former senior secretary to agriculture ministry Moinuddin Abdullah was appointed Chairman of the ACC through a gazette notification of the Cabinet Division.

Moinuddin Abdullah was appointed Chairman of the ACC in 2021. On March 3, 2021, the Cabinet Division issued a gazette notification in this regard.

Between the two commissioners, Md Zahurul Haque was a former district judge, while Asia Khatun was a former secretary of the government.

The ACC chairman enjoys the status and facilities of a judge of the Appellate Division, while commissioners enjoy the status and benefits of a High Court judge.

The development comes after the Interim Government earlier this month formed the Anti-Corruption Reform Commission, to propose necessary reforms aimed at making the ACC more effective, independent, and impartial, following the ouster of the Awami League government through a student-led mass uprising on August 5.

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement which led the mass uprising issued an ultimatum seeking resignation of the ACC chairman and commissioners back in August last.

According to the Anti-Corruption Commission Act of 2004, a commissioner may resign from his/her office by giving one month's notice to the President. However, it was unclear whether Moinuddin, Jahurul and Asia submitted their resignation letters to the President.
