Zia Orphanage Trust Case

A Court in Dhaka specially erected on the playground of the Alia Madrasa at Bakshibazar in the old part of Dhaka fixed January 5 for defence statement in the Zia Orphanage Trust Case on Thursday.
Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar of Dhaka Special Judge's Court-3 set the date after concluding hearing depositions of the witnesses.
On Thursday the counsels of Tareque Rahman and Businessman Sharfuddin concluded their cross examination of the Investigation Officer (IO) in the case.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on July 3 in 2008 with Ramna Police Station accusing Khaleda Zia, her eldest son Tarique Rahman, now living in the UK after securing bail, and four others for misappropriating over Tk 21. 0 million (Tk 2.10 crore) that came as grants from a foreign bank for orphans.
Among the accused, Khaleda, Tarique, a former BNP lawmaker Salimul Huq Kamal and a businessman, Sharfuddin Ahmed, are now on bail while formal principal secretary Dr Kamal Uddin Siddique and Mominur Rahman, nephew of late president Ziaur Rahman are absconding.
