Dhaka University came alive with vibrant celebrations of major social festival of the country's ethnic minority communities with colourful ceremonies and cultural displays on Saturday.
On the day, Sangrai-Changkran-Bihu-Bishu-Bijhu-Sangraing-Sangrai-Boisu festival transformed Jagannath Hall into a hub of traditional activities, featuring discussion meetings, rallies, flower floating ceremonies, traditional games, and alphabet and photography exhibitions.
Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, Vice-Chancellor inaugurated festivities as chief guest. "These celebrations represent significant cultural heritage that enriches our national identity," said Prof. Khan during opening remarks.
Organised by Dhaka University Jum Literary and Cultural Council, a student organization of the ethnic communities, the event attracted hundreds of participants from various communities. Debashish Pal, Provost of Jagannath Hall, and Ananta Tanchangya, President of Council, attended proceedings alongside other dignitaries.
Visitors witnessed over 15 traditional games whilst exploring extensive displays of indigenous alphabets across 12 different languages. Photography exhibition featured over 50 images documenting daily life and cultural practices of Chittagong Hill Tracts communities.
"Our festival brings together multiple indigenous celebrations under one umbrella, showcasing rich diversity within hill communities," explained Tanchangya. "Through these events, we hope to preserve our heritage whilst fostering greater understanding amongst wider society."
Flower floating ceremony, symbolising renewal and prosperity, drew particular attention as participants released hundreds of handcrafted floral offerings into water. Traditional music performances featuring bamboo flutes, drums and indigenous vocal styles accompanied ceremony.
Festival continues with additional cultural programmes including traditional dance performances, folk music competition and indigenous cuisine fair in upcoming days.
