Mamunul seeks ban on JP, 14-party alliance

Election must be held on basis of July Charter, he asserts

Maulana Mamunul Haque, Ameer of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, has demanded a ban on the politics of Jatiya Party (JP) and the 14-party alliance led by the Awami League.

He made the call at a press conference at the party's central office in Purana Paltan on Sunday afternoon, where he placed a five-point demand, including the immediate and effective implementation of the July Charter.

Mamunul alleged that the Jatiya Party and the 14-party alliance act as agents of Indian hegemony and remain close allies of the Awami League. "A domestic and foreign conspiracy is underway to rehabilitate the fugitive Awami League by relying on JP and the 14-party alliance," he claimed. "It is not logical to allow these parties to remain in the political arena if we care about the country's sovereignty and future prosperity. We reiterate-politics of the Jatiya Party and the 14-party alliance must be banned immediately."

On Saturday, the Majlis announced that eight parties would launch a simultaneous programme to press these demands. However, later in the day, AB Party and NCP issued statements saying they were not part of the initiative.

Mamunul stressed that the July Charter must not become an "ineffective document" and urged legal measures-such as an ordinance or a constitutional declaration by the President-for its immediate implementation. "It cannot be left to the next parliament," he warned, citing the Special Powers Act of 1972 as an example of unfulfilled promises.

He also demanded that the next National Parliament election, scheduled for February, be held on the basis of the July Charter. Criticising the unicameral system for concentrating power, he called for the creation of an upper house in Parliament.

"All parties have agreed to this in the National Consensus Commission," he said, adding that the upper chamber must be formed with proportional representation to avoid becoming "a shelter for the unemployed."

To press their demands, Mamunul announced a series of protest programmes a march in Dhaka on September 18, divisional city protests on September 19, and demonstrations in all districts and upazilas on September 26.

The press conference was moderated by Secretary General Maulana Jalaluddin Ahmed. Senior leaders including Senior Nayeb Ameer Maulana Yusuf Ashraf, Joint Secretary General Maulana Ataullah Amin, Maulana Tofazzal Hossain Miyaji, Mufti Sharafat Hossain, Organising Secretary Maulana Azizur Rahman Helal, Maulana Enamul Haque Musa, and Publicity Secretary Maulana Hasan Junaid were present.
