
A Joypurhat court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering his wife at Kalai upazila of the district in 2004.
Joypurhat Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 Judge S M Humayun Kabir announced the verdict on Wednesday.
The convicted individual has been identified as Abu Bakkar Siddique, son of Mozammel Hossain, a resident of Barna Akur village at Gobindganj upazila in Gaibandha district.
According to case details, Abu Bakkar lived in his in-laws' house after marrying Shirin Akter, the victim at Raghobpur Bairagipara village in the village.
During this time, he became involved in an extramarital affair with a widowed neighbour. When his wife found out and objected, a dispute began between them.
On the night of August 13, 2004, Abu Bakkar mixed sleeping pills into the food and served it to his wife and his mother-in-law, Amena Bibi.
The following morning, Shirin died and Amena Bibi was admitted to the hospital in critical condition where she later recovered. Immediately after the incident, Abu Bakkar fled from the house.
Shirin's aunt, Sufia Begum filed a case with the Kalai Police Station in connection with the incident. After an investigation, police submitted a charge sheet to the court on October 16, 2006, naming four individuals as defendants.
Among them, Jaygun Bibi, Golzar Hossain and Toskin Ali were acquitted as the charges against them could not be proven.
The accused, Abu Bakkar, gave a confessional statement under Section 164 in court. Based on the evidence and witness testimonies, the judge sentenced him to life imprisonment and issued an arrest warrant against him as he is absconding.
