Heavy rainfall has submerged dozens of homes and caused extensive damage to crops, including Aman paddy and vegetables, leaving farmers deeply concerned at Singra upazila in Natore district.

According to the Agriculture Department, nearly 718 hectares of farmland, including paddy, banana, papaya and other vegetables, have been affected. Authorities warn that continued rainfall could worsen the damage.

On Saturday, visits to neighbourhoods including Chandpur, Madaripur, Sorkarpara, Baganpara, Petrobangla and Gainpara revealed that dozens of homes and some shops were waterlogged.

Residents have been struggling to move through knee-deep water, with some forced to wade through it to reach markets or work, while others are fishing using nets and scarves in their flooded yards. Many households reported water entering kitchens, making cooking impossible.

Professor Akhtaruzzaman, a local resident of Madaripur Mahalla, said about 20–25 homes in his area were inundated, creating severe hardships for residents due to inadequate drainage systems.

Syedur Ali Akand, principal of the Agriculture Diploma Institute and Chandpur resident, added that nearly 50 houses in his neighbourhood were flooded, with water mixed with waste and sewage making movement difficult.

Chamarai union farmer Omar Faruk reported that six bighas of his banana plantation were flattened by heavy rainfall, causing losses of approximately Tk 3,00,000.

Singra Upazila Agriculture Officer Khandakar Farid confirmed that Aman paddy and other crops suffered major damage, affecting about 2,210 farmers. Field-level Assistant Agriculture Officers are currently assessing the extent of the loss.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mazharul Islam said the municipality has taken steps to drain floodwater and assured that affected farmers would be identified and included in government compensation programmes.
