An Indian prisoner died while in custody at Bagerhat District Jail on Friday night.

He passed away around 12:30 AM while undergoing treatment at Bagerhat 250-Bed District Hospital.

The deceased has been identified as Bablu Das, 25, a fisherman from Harupoint Coastal Police Station, Kalinagar West, Gangadharapur village in Dakshin Chobbis Parganas, India.

Following an autopsy on Saturday, his body was kept in the hospital mortuary.

He was arrested by the Bangladesh Navy on July 14 for allegedly fishing in Bangladesh’s maritime waters and was sent to Bagerhat Jail through the court on July 15.

Bagerhat District Jail superintendent Md Mostafa Kamal said that Bablu Das suddenly fell ill while using the prison restroom and experienced chest pain before collapsing to the floor.

He was immediately taken to Bagerhat 250-Bed District Hospital for treatment, where doctors declared him dead. Doctors suspect that a heart-related problem may have caused his death.

An autopsy was conducted on Saturday in the presence of the executive magistrate. His body was subsequently stored in the hospital morgue. The Indian Embassy has been informed about the death.

Bagerhat 250-Bed District Hospital in-charge, Asim Kumar Samaddar, confirmed that Bablu Das’ body remains in the hospital morgue following the postmortem.

Earlier, on July 14, Bangladesh Navy personnel had detained 34 Indian fishermen along with two trawlers for illegal fishing in Bangladesh waters. Bablu Das was among them.

Currently, a total of 70 Indian fishermen arrested in four separate operations remain in custody at Bagerhat District Jail.
