ATM Azharul Islam, a central executive council member of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and a leader previously sentenced to death in a war crimes case, has formally taken oath as the party's Nayeb-e-Ameer.

Party sources confirmed the development on Saturday (29 November).

Jamaat had renewed demands for his release soon after the fall of Sheikh Hasina on 5 August 2024. On 26 February this year, the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed allowed his appeal for hearing. Following regular proceedings, the court delivered its verdict on 27 May, acquitting him of all charges. After nearly 13 years in prison, Azharul Islam was released on 28 May. He was subsequently made a member of Jamaat's central executive council.
