The Dhaka Bar Association has announced a seven-day mourning programme following the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

In a statement, it said the national flag has been lowered to half-mast at its premises, while black flags have been hoisted as a mark of respect. Lawyers are observing the mourning period by wearing black badges, alongside arrangements for continuous recitation of the Holy Quran.

Begum Khaleda Zia passed away on Tuesday, ending a political career that shaped Bangladesh’s political landscape for decades.

As the country’s first woman prime minister, she served three terms in office and emerged as one of the most influential and polarising figures in post-independence Bangladesh.

Leaders of the legal community described Khaleda Zia as a symbol of courage and democratic resistance, noting that despite prolonged incarceration, political turmoil and personal hardship, she remained steadfast in her convictions and chose to stay in the country.

Senior lawyers recalled her leadership during critical phases of Bangladesh’s democratic journey, saying her struggles and sacrifices would continue to inspire future generations.
