'JaPa rehabilitation won't be allowed thru polls'

Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan said nation do not want rehabilitation of Jatiya Party (JaPa) by allowing them to contest the 13th National Parliamentary Election.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday after meeting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin at EC building in Dhaka's Agargaon, NCP spokesperson and head of the party’s Election Management Committee, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, said the party had clearly communicated its position to the commission.

“We do not want to see them in the election. We have clearly informed the commission of this stance. We have said before as well that we do not want any kind of rehabilitation of Jatiya Party through the electoral process,” he stated.

Regarding Election Commission’s response, Asif Mahmud said the EC had listened to their concerns and assured them that any action would be taken in accordance with the law and established legal procedures.

Following the scrutiny of nomination papers for the 13th parliamentary election, 57 out of 224 Jatiya Party candidates had their nominations cancelled. 

At present, 167 candidates from the party remain valid contenders in the election.
