8 policemen suspended over drug embezzlement in Ctg

Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has suspended eight police personnel, from sub-inspector to constable, over allegations of embezzling around 1 lakh pieces of Yaba pills recovered at a checkpost under Baklia Police Station in Chattogram.

The suspended officers are SI Mohammad Al-Amin Sarkar of Baklia Police Station, SI Mohammad Amir Hossain (currently working at Kotwali Police Station), ASIs Saiful Alam, Md Ziaur Rahman, Md Saddam Hossain and Enamul Haque, Constable Md Rashedul Hasan Bhuiyan and female Constable Umme Habiba Swapna.

They were suspended under PRB Rule-880 for narcotics embezzlement, providing misleading information to higher authorities and disobeying lawful orders. The decision, signed by CMP South Zone Deputy Police Commissioner and Additional DIG Hossain Mohammad Kabir Bhuiyan, took effect immediately on Sunday.

According to the investigation, police recovered 80,000 to 100,000 pieces of Yaba pills from a bus at the Shah Amanat Bridge checkpost on December 8. The yaba was allegedly concealed in a trolley bag belonging to Cox’s Bazar District Police Constable Md Imtiaz Hossain, who was later released without proper legal action.

CMP said the allegations were proven through confessions and witness statements. A departmental probe has recommended maximum punishment. During suspension, the officers have been attached to the Dampara Police Lines.
