A dramatic turn has unfolded in the high-profile murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, as detective police on Tuesday submitted a chargesheet naming 17 individuals, including former Ward No. 6 councillor Taizul Islam Chowdhury Bappi and Faisal Karim Masud, in connection with the politically charged killing.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Detective Branch) Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam confirmed the submission during a briefing at the DMP Media Centre, revealing that the murder was orchestrated under the planning of Bappi, who also serves as the organising secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan North Jubo League.
"Hadi was vocal against the fallen Awami League government. He was killed due to political vendetta," Shafiqul Islam said, emphasising the political motivations behind the attack.
In response to a question, the DB officer said that Hadi had introduced a new style of politics. As a result, he was shot dead under the direction and planning of Bappi, the organizing secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan North Jubo League and former ward councillor of the Mirpur area.
On December 12, he was ambushed while campaigning in the Bijoynagar area, shot by an assailant riding a motorcycle. Gravely injured, he was first treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, later admitted to Evercare Hospital, and finally airlifted to Singapore, where he succumbed to his injuries on December 18.
The chargesheet identifies the 17 accused as Faisal Karim Masud alias Rahul alias Daud, Alamgir Hossain, Taizul Islam Chowdhury Bappi, Philip Snal, Mukti Mahmud, Jesmin Akhter, Humayun Kabir, Hasi Begum, Saheda Parvin Samia, Wahid Ahmed Shipu, Maria Akhter Lima, Md Kabir, Nuruzzaman alias Ujjal, Sibion Dio, Sanjay Chisim, Md Aminul Islam alias Raju, and Md Faisal. Of these, 11 have been arrested, while Bappi, Faisal, Alamgir, Philip, Mufti Mahmud, and Jesmin remain at large.
