A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on Delta Group Chairman Engineer AKM Faruk Ahmed and his wife, Ferdous Ara Begum, following an application filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Foyez passed the order after considering the ACC petition, which was submitted through the commission’s prosecution unit on January 6.
According to the ACC, allegations against Faruk Ahmed are currently under inquiry, including the acquisition of loans worth around Tk2,250 crore from various banks, money laundering through over-invoicing and fake letters of credit and accumulation of illicit wealth. The inquiry is being conducted under ER No. 41/2019 related to money laundering.
The ACC stated that reliable sources indicated the accused might attempt to flee the country, prompting the need for a travel restriction to ensure a fair and proper investigation.
ACC Assistant Director and inquiry team leader Md Saifur Rahman filed the application, attaching the commission’s approval for the travel ban. After the hearing, the court granted an order barring both Faruk Ahmed and his wife from travelling abroad.
