COX'S BAZAR, JAN 12: A Bangladeshi youth was critically injured in a landmine explosion along the Teknaf border on Monday, just a day after a child was injured by a stray bullet fired from across the Myanmar border.

The explosion occurred around 11am in the Shahjahan Island area along the Hoaikyong border in Teknaf upazila. The injured, Hanif, is the son of Fazal Karim of Lambabil village in Hoaikyong union. Hanif was initially taken to Kutupalong MSF Hospital in Ukhiya and is being shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Locals said the mine was planted by the Arakan Army, an armed insurgent group active in Myanmar's Rakhine state. The incident triggered protests and a road blockade by local residents demanding improved security along the border.

Lieutenant Colonel Zahirul Islam, commander of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion-64 in Ukhiya, said the youth was injured while fishing in the Naf River. "Initial information     SEE PAGE 2 COL 1
