The government has decided to provide a total of Tk 2 crore in financial assistance to the family of Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi, including funds for housing and livelihood support.

Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed announced the decision on Wednesday while speaking to journalists after chairing a meeting of Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase at Cabinet Division Conference Room in Bangladesh Secretariat.

Responding to queries, Dr Salehuddin said the assistance would be provided through two separate allocations.

“Tk 1 crore will be given from Ministry of Finance for the purchase of a flat or house in Dhaka. The entire amount may not be required. Another Tk 1 crore will be provided from the Chief Adviser’s fund to support the family’s livelihood,” he said.

He added that the Ministry of Finance has already approved the allocation of Tk 1 crore for housing purposes.

Sharif Osman Hadi had earlier announced plans to contest the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election as an independent candidate from Dhaka-8 constituency.

Hadi was shot on December 12, a day after the election and referendum schedules were announced, at Box Culvert Road area under Paltan Model Police Station in Dhaka.

He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where he underwent surgery and was later shifted to Evercare Hospital for advanced treatment.

On December 15, he was flown to Singapore by air ambulance and admitted to Singapore General Hospital.

He died there on December 18 at around 9:30 PM while undergoing treatment.
