A syndicate is changing the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers of stolen mobile phones and selling them to cybercriminals in Dhaka and other parts of the country, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has said.

The DB's Cyber and Special Crime Division has arrested a member of the group along with IMEI-changing software, a laptop and other equipment. The arrestee was identified as Md Asaduzzaman, 38.

DB's Cyber Crime Division Deputy Commissioner Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabdar confirmed it at a press conference on Sunday at DMP Media Centre on Minto Road.

He said the DB became suspicious after noticing that a large number of mobile phones were having their IMEI numbers changed on a daily basis. Following this, a raid was conducted on Saturday.
