BAGERHAT, Jan 25:  Following funeral prayers on Saturday night, Kaniz Subarna Swarnali, wife of Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Chhatra League President Jewel Hasan Saddam, and their nine-month-old son Nazim were buried side by side in Sabekdanga village, Bagerhat Sadar Upazila.

Saddam, currently in custody at Jashore Central Jail, was allowed to view the bodies for only five minutes at the prison gate after his request for parole was denied.

Saddam's uncle, Md Hemayet Uddin, said a written application for parole had been submitted to the district magistrate on January 23, but the matter was referred to Bagerhat prison authorities, who claimed they lacked the legal authority to grant parole. "Under the law, the application had to be made to the prison where Saddam is held," he explained.

Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner Golam Md Baten said the parole could not be approved because it did not comply with prison regulations, adding that the family was advised to go to Jashore to request parole.
