An undertrial prisoner died after committing suicide at Kushtia District Jail early Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Bidyut Ali, 27, son of Chaddu Ali of Fakirabad village under Bheramara upazila in the district. He was an accused in a narcotics case.
According to sources, Bidyut had been in custody for about two months and was facing trial in a drug-related case. Due to mental health issues, he had been kept under treatment at the jail hospital.
He was found hanging inside the bathroom of the jail hospital early Saturday. Preliminary findings suggest he took his own life.
Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Kushtia Jail Superintendent Shariful Alam confirmed the incident and said that the body will be handed over to the family after completing legal procedures.
