Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Convener and 11-party alliance candidate Nahid Islam has filed an appeal with the Appellate Division of Supreme Court (SC) challenging a High Court order that rejected his plea to cancel the nomination of BNP candidate MA Quayum in Dhaka-11 constituency.

Nahid moved the Appellate Division on Saturday, alleging that Quayum holds dual citizenship and concealed relevant information in his nomination papers.

Confirming the development, Nahid’s lawyer Zahirul Islam Musa said the matter may be placed before the chamber judge on Sunday (February 8).

Earlier, on February 3, the High Court summarily dismissed Nahid’s writ petition challenging the legality of Quayum’s candidacy.

The order was passed by a bench comprising Justice Fahmida Kader and Justice Md Asif Hasan.

During the High Court hearing, Nahid was represented by lawyers Mohammad Hossain Lipu and Zahirul Islam Musa, while Quayum was defended by Ahsanul Karim, Ruhul Quddus Kajol, Mahbubur Rahman Khan and Kazi Akhtar Hossain.

Nahid had filed the writ petition on February 2 seeking suspension of Quayum’s candidacy for Dhaka-11 seat on allegations of dual citizenship and suppression of information.

The chief election commissioner and other relevant authorities were named as respondents.

Earlier, the Election Commission declared the nomination papers of both Nahid and BNP candidate MA Quayum valid for Dhaka-11 constituency ahead of the upcoming National Parliamentary Election.
