Fisherman held with illegal fishing nets in Padma river

A fisherman was arrested along with illegal current nets from the Padma River in Rajbari’s Goalanda upazila on Monday noon.

The arrested was identified as Md Shah Alam Sheikh, 20, a resident of Ainuddin Pramanik Para under Daulatdia union in the upazila.

According to press release, a joint team led by Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Md Anwarul Islam and Naval Police outpost in-charge Trinath Saha conducted a drive around 1 PM at the Kalabagan area of the Padma River and arrested Shah Alam with 300 metres of illegal fishing nets.

They also recovered 100,000 metres of illegal fishing nets and five kilograms of hilsa fish in abandoned condition.

Later, the fish were distributed among a nearby madrasa and the seized 100,000 metres of illegal nets were destroyed by burning on the spot.

Daulatdia Naval Police Outpost in-charge Trinath Saha confirmed the incident through a press release and said that legal procedures are underway against the arrested fisherman under the Fisheries Protection and Conservation Act.
