A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced domestic worker Suravi Akter Nahid to death for 2019 murders of Afroz Begum and her maid Diti in Dhanmondi.
Another accused, Bacchu Mia, was acquitted due to lack of evidence.
Judge Tauhida Akter of Seventh Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court of Dhaka delivered the verdict.
The victims’ bodies were discovered on November 1, 2019 in a fifth-floor flat at Lobelia House. Afroz Begum was the mother-in-law of businessman Kazi Monir Uddin Tarim. Both victims had their throats slit.
The case was filed on November 3, 2019 by Afroz Begum’s daughter and was investigated by multiple agencies before being handed over to Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), which submitted charges in February 2022.
The trial began in October 2022, with the court hearing testimony from 25 of the 32 witnesses before delivering its judgment.
