DU TSC, hall areas turn into iftar festivity hub

Dhaka University (DU) campus transformed into an iftar festival on the first and second day of Ramadan, with student organisations hosting elaborate programmes at hall areas, TSC premises and Bhabana Chhattar to mark the sunset meal after a day of fasting.

Initiative for Safe and Assure Future (INSAF), a volunteer platform, distributed iftar among students in the hall area, organised by Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir’s DU unit. 

Jatiya Chhatrashakti arranged a mass iftar at TSC, while students hosted individual iftar programmes across various halls.

Jahid Ahsan, central president of Jatiya Chhatrashakti, told media that during Sheikh Hasina’s regime, campus iftar programmes were completely banned through official circulars. “Since then, we have been organising mass iftar at TSC as a form of protest”, he told media.

He recalled that university friends had organised a ‘Productive Ramadan’ programme at Sheikh Russell Tower mosque for Ramadan-related discussions, which was attacked by Awami League and Chhatra League activists who left participants bloodied and injured. 

“After Hasina’s fall, we have been organising mass iftar every year. This year's TSC programme continues that tradition of protest”, Jahid said.

DUCSU General Secretary SM Farhad attended INSAF’s iftar distribution in the hall area. He told media, Chhatra Shibir’s Dhaka University unit organised iftar programmes for 20 consecutive days during last Ramadan and the running committee has continued the initiative this year.

“On behalf of the university unit of Chhatra Shibir, iftar is being gifted to 1,500 students today. This is about sharing the joy of iftar”, Farhad told media.

He added that they were trying to reach every student’s hands with iftar gifts, accommodating well-wishers and treating all students as family members according to their capacity.

Entire campus turned into an iftar gathering, with various programmes featuring diverse food items creating a festive atmosphere as students broke their fast together.
