A man died after being beaten by a mob in capital’s Shyampur area on suspicion of theft early Monday.
The incident took place at Postogola cremation ground area within a new project site of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).
The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahim, 35.
According to police, Rahim was brought to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 12:30 AM.
Later, he was admitted to the One Stop Emergency Centre, where he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 5:30 AM while undergoing treatment.
BIWTA project site engineer Biplob, who transported Rahim to the hospital, said local residents allegedly caught him attempting to steal iron rods from the project site. He was then severely beaten, leaving him critically injured.
DMCH police camp in-charge Inspector Md Faruk said that the body has been kept at the hospital morgue for further legal procedures.
