Minister Robi warns stern action on fare overcharging

Sheikh Robiul Alam, the Shipping Minister, on Saturday warned that strict measures will be taken against transport operators who charge excessive fares during the upcoming Eid travel season, while assuring that this year's journey will be safer and more comfortable than previous years.

The minister made the remarks during a visit to the under-construction building of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority in Narayanganj. He said necessary directives have already been issued to relevant ministries to ensure smooth travel, with special preparations in place to prevent traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Sylhet and Dhaka-Chattogram highways.

Addressing allegations of pollution and extortion on highways and waterways, Sheikh Robiul Alam emphasized that coordinated measures with relevant authorities will tackle these issues promptly. He also promised that the long-pending Narayanganj double-line project would be expedited.

The minister expressed concern over reports that lighter vessels carrying wheat and other essential goods were remaining idle at sea for days instead of unloading on time, potentially creating artificial shortages. "Legal action will be taken against those responsible if these allegations are verified," he said, noting that explanations have already been sought from the concerned parties.

During a surprise inspection in the Dhaleshwari River area of Munshiganj, he observed several lighter vessels remaining idle for 6 to 18 days. According to regulations, these goods should be promptly transferred to designated warehouses.
"Any attempt to create artificial scarcity or earn excessive profits by delaying cargo will not be tolerated. Such practices threaten market stability and harm consumers," he added.

A task force under the Department of Shipping is conducting regular monitoring of waterways to prevent delays and irregularities, ensuring that essential commodities reach their destinations efficiently during the Eid season.
