Students of Islamic University(IU) in Kushtia staged a protest rally demanding the death penalty for the killer of Asma Sadia Runa, Chairperson and Assistant Professor of the Social Welfare department.

The protest march started around 10:30AM on Thursday in front of the theology and islamic studies faculty building which paraded different roads of the campus and ended at the administration building premises.

Assistant Prof Habibur Rahman of the department and more than a hundred students were present at the protest rally.

The protesters announced various demands including, ensuring the quick execution of the killer, installing CCTV cameras across the campus, dormitories, and departments and storing footage in both departmental and central servers, restricting campus entry without smart ID cards, bringing van drivers and shopkeepers under an ID system and introducing separate uniforms and name tags for them, paying daily-based employees through bank accounts, ensuring accountability of officials and employees, enforcing restrictions on the entry of outsiders into the campus.

Sadia Sabrina, a student of the department, said, ''We have come here to demand the capital punishment for our teacher’s killer. How extreme must an employee be to enter her room and kill her! Many people witnessed the incident. Therefore, we demand proper justice for this murder.’

Habibur Rahman, assistant professor of the department said, ''First of all, I am a human being, then a teacher. I also have a family and children. What happened yesterday is extremely brutal and tragic. There can be no justification for such an incident. We demand a proper investigation and swift justice for those involved.’

However, the post-mortem of the deceased teacher was conducted at 10AM at Kushtia General Hospital and her funeral prayer is scheduled to be held after Zuhr at the Kushtia Eidgah Ground.
