A mobile court has sentenced five drug addicts to jail terms and imposed fines during an anti-narcotics drive conducted at Hathazari upazila in Chattogram district on Monday.
According to sources, upazila administration and Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) jointly conducted drives at several locations in Hathazari municipality and caught two individuals red-handed while they were consuming drugs.
The accused, Md Masud and Md Mamun, were sentenced to three months’ imprisonment each and fined Tk 1 lakh each under the Narcotics Control Act, 2018.
In a separate incident, Md Rabiul Hossain Bappi, Md Jisan and Md Mehdi were arrested for consuming hemp in Abbasia Pool area of the municipality and each was sentenced to seven days’ simple imprisonment.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Muhammad Abdullah Al Mumin confirmed the incident and instructed DNC officials and Hathazari Model Police Station to file regular cases against the main drug peddlers and suppliers based on the statements of the detainees.
