A Dhaka court on Thursday rejected a petition seeking permission to file a case against 42 people, including Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, over the alleged killing of 12 police officers at Jatrabari Police Station during the July mass uprising.

The petition was filed by Jalal Hossain, the younger brother of Jatrabari Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Abul Hossain, with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rounak Jahan Toki.

After recording the complainant’s statement, the court dismissed the application and declined to take the matter into cognisance, according to court sources.

In the complaint, Jalal Hossain alleged that on August 5, 2024, a group led by Asif Mahmud attacked Jatrabari Police Station at around 5:30 PM.

The petition claimed that the attackers set fire to seven to eight vehicles, looted property, seized control of the police station and burned important government documents.

It further alleged that 12 police officers, including OC Abul Hossain, were hacked to death during the attack.

The petition also sought to name several individuals as accused, including Member of Parliament Abdul Hannan Masud, Abu Baker Majumder, Rifat Rashid, Hasib Al Islam and Nusrat Tabassum, along with a number of student leaders from different universities.
