Mahi, Liton to lead DUJA

Dhaka University Journalists' Association (DUJA) held its executive committee election Tuesday in a festive atmosphere.

The election resulted in Kaler Kantho's DU correspondent Mohammad Manzur Hossain Mahi as president and Star News's DU correspondent Liton Islam as general secretary.

Voting took place from 11:50 AM to 2:30 PM at the association's office in the Student-Teacher Centre (TSC). Chief Election Commissioner and former DUJA president Mohammad Nurul Karim Bhuiyan, currently Gazipur district commissioner, announced results at 3 PM following counting.

A total of 41 voters exercised their franchise in elections for nine positions, 31 voted in person and 10 through postal ballots. Mahi secured 30 votes for president, while Liton received 24 votes for general secretary.

Former DUJA general secretary and Prothom Alo senior reporter Riyadul Karim, former general secretary and Daily Ittefaq senior reporter Saidur Rahman, current DUJA president Mohiuddin Mujahid Mahi and general secretary Mahadi Hasan were present as election commissioners.

Other elected members are vice-president Mahathir Mohammed (Daily Star), joint general secretary Mohammad Rahad Uddin (Daily Janakantha), office secretary HM Khalid Hasan (Desh Rupantor), treasurer Niemur Rahman Emon (Daily Observer), and executive members Mohammad Borhan Uddin (Channel 24), Mohammad Shamsudozza Nabab (Dhaka Tribune), and Mohammad Sahedul Islam (Times of Bangladesh).

Chief Election Commissioner Bhuiyan congratulated the newly elected committee, saying, "DUJA always believes in democratic practice. We are pleased that elections were held in a festive environment after a long time. I hope the new leadership will work together for the welfare of students."

The election marks a return to regular democratic practice for the journalists' association at the country's premier university.
