A court in India’s West Bengal has sent Bangladeshi national Philip Sangma to 14 days of judicial custody in connection with the murder case of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
Sangma was produced before the Bidhannagar Sub-Divisional Court on Saturday after completion of his police remand, where the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate ordered his detention in jail. He has been sent to Dum Dum Central Correctional Home.
According to investigators, Sangma is accused of assisting two prime suspects in the case, Faisal Karim Masud alias Rahul and Alamgir Hossain, to illegally enter India through the Meghalaya border.
Acting on a tip-off, he was arrested on March 13 by the Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police from Shantipur bypass area in Nadia district. A court later granted seven days’ police remand for interrogation.
During questioning of the two main accused, STF officials reportedly obtained crucial information linking Sangma to the cross-border movement. The suspects claimed they entered India with the help of Sangma, described as a border facilitator from Bangladesh's Haluaghat.
Investigators further said Sangma himself later crossed into India through the same route under pressure from Bangladeshi authorities and stayed at different locations in the country.
A case has been filed against him under the Foreigners Act, West Bengal Police confirmed.
The case stems from the fatal shooting of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho, who was attacked by assailants on motorcycles in Dhaka’s Paltan area on December 12, 2025. He was taken to Singapore in a seriously injured condition, where he died on December 18 while undergoing treatment.
