Having completed its first 100 days in office, the government is now moving into a phase focused on implementation and delivering results.
To accelerate administrative activities and reduce the workload, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has taken a major initiative to expand the cabinet.
At least five new members may be added to the cabinet before the budget session begins on June 7.
The current cabinet, consisting of 49 members, was sworn in on February 17. In the initial stages, many ministers were assigned responsibility for two or three ministries to ensure administrative coordination. However, as the scope of work has expanded, it has become necessary to distribute responsibilities more evenly.
Key ministries, including agriculture, commerce, industry, jute and textiles, public administration, and food, may also see portfolio adjustments as part of the reshuffle.
Among the names being discussed as potential new cabinet members are ABM Mosharraf Hossain, Mahidur Rahman, Md Abul Kalam and Ershad Ullah.
There is also a strong possibility that a representative from the Noakhali region will be included. According to relevant sources, the necessary administrative vetting and background checks have already been completed.
During its first 100 days, the government has taken a number of positive steps in the agricultural sector, improving law and order and controlling the prices of essential goods.
However, observers note that many decisions still depend heavily on the direct involvement of the Prime Minister.
Prime Minister's Adviser and Prime Minister's Office Spokesperson Mahdi Amin, described the move as a policy decision taken at the highest level of government. If everything proceeds as planned, the new members will be sworn in before the budget session, marking the beginning of the government's second phase of activities.
