Iran’s military has warned that it could fully close the Strait of Hormuz if the United States carries out threats to strike the country’s power plants, escalating already heightened regional tensions.
In a statement carried by Iranian state television on Sunday, the operational command Khatam al-Anbiya said the strategic waterway would remain closed “until our destroyed power plants are rebuilt” if such attacks take place.
The warning came in response to recent remarks attributed to US President Donald Trump suggesting possible action against Iranian energy infrastructure.
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but critical shipping lane linking the Persian Gulf with global sea routes, is one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints. Despite rising tensions, limited maritime traffic continues, with analysts estimating that current vessel movement is only about five percent of pre-conflict levels, according to data from analytics firm Kpler.
The developments add further uncertainty to global energy markets, which remain sensitive to any disruption in oil and gas shipments passing through the region.
